Remembrance Sunday

Sharing a song which to me is simply a song of remembrance for the fallen soldier – named or unnamed.

This song is as relevant today as it was then, and not just for Indians.  “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon” is a Hindi song written by Kavi Pradeep, composed by C. Ramchandra and sung by Lata Mangeshkar commemorating Indian soldiers who died during the Sino-Indian War of 1962.

I have translated it for non Hindi speakers.

O people of my nation shout loudly
This is an auspicious day for us all, fly high the beloved Tri colour
But don’t forget Brave men have lost lives at the borders
Please remember those who never came back home

O people of my nation have a tear in your eye
and remember the martyrs and their sacrifice

When Himalaya was attacked and freedom was in danger
They fought till their last breath, then laid down their life
And with their head held high the brave martyrs went to sleep
Remember the martyrs and their sacrifice

When we were celebrating diwali, They were playing Holi (in this context a blood bath)
When we were safe at home, They were facing bullets
They were our brave soldiers, They were our young men
remember the martyrs and their sacrifice

some were Sikhs, Jaats or Marathas, some were Gurkhas or Madrasis
(but) Every brave man who died in the battle field, was an Indian
The blood that fell on the mountains was Indian
remember the martyrs and their sacrifice

The body was injured but they picked up their rifles
and each one shot ten before they lost their senses and fell
When the last moment came they said we are dying
be happy beloved countrymen now we are leaving
What dedicated people they were , what proud people they were
remember the martyrs and their sacrifice

Lest you forget this story is being told
remember the martyrs and their sacrifice

Hail India! Hail Indian Soldiers (2)

(And Every Brave Soldier anywhere in the world who died for our freedom)

Remember the fallen, Care for the injured, Look after them ALL.

today, tomorrow, everyday.
